Adolescent development is greatly influenced by the environment and the people around them. One component that has a big impact is parents. Parents have an important role in shaping and directing the development of children's character and abilities.
However, what happens if the home environment and parents are dysfunctional? Dysfunctional parents are parents who fail to meet their children's basic needs, both physical and emotional. This can be caused by various factors, ranging from economic problems and parents' mental health to negative habits such as alcohol or drug abuse.
Children of dysfunctional parents often face challenges in their cognitive and psychological development. Research has shown that children of dysfunctional parents tend to achieve lower scores on cognitive tests. This shows that an unstable and less supportive environment can hinder children's cognitive development.
In addition, they are also more likely to face psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety. A less supportive home environment can contribute to mental health problems in adolescents. However, there are ways to address these negative impacts and support healthy child development. One way is through parenting education. Parenting education is the process for parents to learn how to support their child's development healthily and effectively.
Parents learn about the importance of their role in their child's development and how they can help their child grow and develop healthily. What parents should not forget when accompanying their teenagers to grow is to build empathy for their teenagers' feelings, ways of thinking, perceptions, and points of view. The existing parenting education is not only about how to care for children but also how to understand children. By understanding children, parents can better understand their children's needs and feelings, so they can provide better and more effective support.
As parents, we can indeed find better ways to educate parents and help them understand and overcome their dysfunction. Ultimately, helping these teens understand and overcome their parents' dysfunction can have critical benefits for the teens' development.
Creating a supportive environment for our teenagers is very necessary so that they can grow and develop healthily and happily. Therefore, the most important thing we have to do is support the development of teenagers, which starts with parents being open to admitting their weaknesses and mistakes and being open to learning to improve themselves. This aims to create healthy relationships with teenagers in the future.
